ROTARY THIS WEEK

What’s the buzz about Operation Pollination? District Governor Elayne Bozick and the Environmental Committee are encouraging clubs to enter a friendly competition to protect the planet. One club will win a Paul Harris Fellow to award to a person or persons of its choice. We’ll discuss this over lunch Wednesday at Wick Park.

See you again Thursday for the Traveling Beerfest Preview from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Noble Creature Wild Ales & Lagers, 126 E. Rayen Ave. Sample some craft brews, vote for your favorite Peppers in Oil contestant, and enjoy some savory treats from Trina Williams. Bring a friend! The Traveling Beerfest enables the club to promote its largest fundraiser and thank local breweries for their ongoing participation.

Reminder: An Operation Warm Donation Drive will take place during Oktoberfest from noon to 6 Saturday at Penguin City Brewing Co., 460 E. Federal St.

Rotary Last Week

Jack Kravitz, co-chair of the 2025 Rotary Craft Beerfest, updated members on planning for the biggest fundraiser of the year.

The event will be on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Stambaugh Auditorium. Sessions will be from 1 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. General admission tickets will be $50 each. Instead of VIP tickets, premium tickets will be sold for $100. Premium ticket holders will be seated in a cordoned-off area, receive commemorative beer steins, enjoy charcuterie, and have special access to brewers and their products.

Wine will be added to the beverage options, Jack noted.

WFMJ-TV will observe Craft Beer Month in January with four segments about Beerfest, Jack said. The Summit radio station will promote our event in the Youngstown, Akron-Canton and Athens markets. Past District Governor Michelle Charles, who works at The Summit, will be the DJ.

Jack also invited all to attend the Traveling Groundhog Craft Beer Preview on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Noble Creature (see Rotary This Week for details).

Aimee Fifarek noted that best-selling mystery author Sandra Brown will be nearby on Sept. 19, as the special guest at a reception at the public library’s Main Library, 305 Wick Ave. Contact Deb Liptak at dliptak@libraryvisit.org or 330-740-6086 for tickets.

CLIMATE FRESK CONTINUES

Dr. Jonathan Foley, Project Drawdown executive director, says big technological solutions (like carbon capture) may help to remove the last bit of carbon from the atmosphere in the future, but the two most impactful and immediate actions are decentralized, cheap, and effective – stop both deforestation and methane leaks. Go to https://lnkd.in/d9VGwiv8 to learn more.

Why wait on solutions for tomorrow when we can act today, asks Elsa Higby of RCY’s Environmental Committee. Join the public climate conversation on the 3rd Thursday of every month. The next one will be Thursday, Sept. 19, at BRITE Energy Innovators in Warren. Information and registration are on Eventbrite. https://lnkd.in/dTtjpYRt

STEAM MINI GRANT EXTENSION

RCY is extending its call for applications for its STEM and STEAM Mini Grant Program for Educators. Awards with a monetary value up to $500 will be given to applicants from public and private schools grades K-8 in the City of Youngstown. The instructions and application to apply are available on the Rotary Club of Youngstown website https://youngstownrotary.com through Sept. 30.

Funding for the grant program comes from monies raised from the Rotaryclipse fundraising event held at Penguin City Brewing Co. the day before the total eclipse in April. The grant program was created to show appreciation to local educators and support growth in STEM and STEAM for local students.

Less lawn care is more desirable

Rotary Magazine this month includes a story about the “lazy gardener’s guide.” Rather than mere justification for added leisure time, this makes a case for “rewilding” – that is, the use of native plants that have been time-tested to flourish in certain conditions.

The story originates in Gig Harbor, WA, and concerns the slow acceptance by some residents to stop mowing near a highway interchange. Rotarians Gary and Chris Pellett were agents of change, recommending grass replacement with native trees and plants that also attract pollinators. About 30 volunteers turned out on a February day to plant 175 trees and shrubs.

“I have people say to me, ‘That is so much work,”” Chris Pellett said. That may be true in the beginning phase but, after five years, “I think I spent a tenth of the time as someone with a lawn. I have to do some trimming in the spring and a little raking in the fall, and that’s about it. Whereas a lawn takes up a lot of time, money, fertilizer, and mowing every week. Think of all those hours.”

Real the full story in the September 2024 Rotary Magazine, which is mailed to RCY members. You also can swap your printed mags for digital ones at magazine.rotary.org.
