ROTARY THIS WEEK

This won’t be a typical Wednesday. We will not meet for lunch at Wick Park. Instead, the club’s Holiday Party will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the YSU Pollock House, 603 Wick Ave. Advance registration was required; no tickets will be sold at the door.

Reminders about the Holiday Party:

  1. Park at the university-owned lot between the Nunziato Veterans Resource Center (next to Pollock House) and the YSU Foundation Building. Look for a walkway with a simple gate at the rear of the Veterans Center. Follow it to the Pollock House driveway and entrance.

  2. Wear holiday attire, business casual clothes, or ugly sweaters.

  3. Bring a few dozen of your favorite holiday cookies to share.

Rotary Last Week

Members enjoyed a Wide Open Wednesday on Dec. 4, with President George Nelson’s encouragement to relax and catch up with one another after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

With $13,200 in sponsorship commitments, the Beerfest Committee says we are one-third of the way toward meeting this year’s fundraising goal. All members are asked to sell event tickets (see Dominick Brown) or secure a sponsorship (contact Jack Kravitz).

Rotarians participated at many levels in the Downtown Holiday Parade, Light Up Night and Flea on Phelps on Dec. 6. Members walked in the parade, distributing candy and Beer Fest flyers, and collecting letters to Santa at the DeYor Center. Some were involved in event planning and management. Others were in the crowd and supported downtown businesses.

Special thanks to Justin Froelich and TEMA Roofing Services for the use of a truck and driver during the parade. Our inflatable Rotary logo was seen by thousands!

HOLIDAY PARTY INVITATION

RCY’s annual Holiday Party on Dec. 11 will be in a new location – the Pollock House on Wick Avenue, home to Youngstown State University’s President Bill Johnson. The party will begin at 6 p.m. A pasta bar by Inspired Catering and the Rotary Traveling Bar will be on hand. Expect entertainment and good cheer throughout the evening. Rotarians and their guests may register online here. The club will not meet at noon that day.

JOIN THE PARADE

RCY has registered to enter the downtown Holiday Parade at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. President George is looking for at least 10 Rotarians to share the Magic of Rotary with attendees.

Gerri Jenkins needs someone with a pickup or flatbed truck to join the parade and carry our inflatable Rotary logo along the route. See Gerri or George to volunteer.

Rotarians can gather at the Mahoning County Land Bank office on the third floor of City Center One at East Federal and Champion streets. Deb Flora and the Land Bank will provide light refreshments.

The parade is one of many First Fridays events on Dec. 6. Youngstown Flea on Phelps will be from 4 to 8 p.m. The SMARTS Holiday Open House will be worth a visit, the tree lighting on Central Square will be at about 7:15 p.m., and commemorative mugs will be available for evening drink specials. ROTARY FOUNDATION APPEAL

Rotary is not just a service club. It is a humanitarian organization with an office in the United Nations Building. Our areas of focus include fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, protecting the environment, saving mothers and children, supporting education,  growing local economies, and protecting the environment.

Contributions to the Rotary Foundation are encouraged. The money doesn’t just go to faraway places. A portion of each contribution will come back to our club in the form of district grants to support projects in our community.

Rotarians who give $20 or more will be entered in a drawing to win a Paul Harris Fellow. Points earned by contributing to the foundation may be transferred to other Rotarians toward their PHFs.

Linda Henderson, Rotary Foundation Chair of District 6650, says donation forms were mailed recently to all Rotarians. District Governor Elayne Bozick asks Rotarians to give $66.50 or more in honor of our district.

SAVE THE DATE

Mid-Year Club Assembly, noon Jan. 8, Wick Park Pavilion.

Seventh Annual Groundhog Craft Beerfest, 1-4 and 5-8 p.m. Feb. 1, Stambaugh Auditorium.

Sustainable Holiday Tips

When we work to restore habitats for pollinators, we also are reducing carbon emissions and increasing air and water quality. It comes down to refining our actions, one holiday at a time.

With three weeks to go before the Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations, here are some practical earth-friendly ideas from the writers of Pebble, a British eco lifestyle magazine that promotes stylish, sustainable living.

Avoid Single-Use Plastic

One of the simplest ways to have an ethical and sustainable holiday is to avoid single use plastics when you shop.  Instead, shop for ideally reuseable gifts that are also free of single use plastic, opting for products made from biodegradable or recyclable materials.

Choose Sustainable Stocking Fillers

Traditional stocking stuffers often come with excessive packaging and contribute to single-use plastic waste.

Opting for sustainable stocking alternatives, such as bamboo toothbrushes, reusable snack bags, or biodegradable beauty products, not only reduces the environmental footprint but also promotes conscious consumer choices.

Holiday Decor

Christmas is such a fun excuse to get creative with decorations.

Make your own decorations like origami stars and popcorn garland, or browse the decorations at your local thrift store, and set yourself on the right path.

Avoid Plastic Decorations

For anyone living a zero-waste lifestyle, an equally zero waste holiday means avoiding plastic decorations like tinsel, baubles, and glitter. You may intend to use them every year, but once they break, they can’t be recycled.

Glitter also contains microplastics that infiltrate waterways and harm aquatic life. In contrast, sustainable ornaments are often made from recycled materials like glass or wood, which means fewer new materials and a smaller carbon footprint.

So while you should keep using any plastic decorations you already own for as long as possible, when replacing them or adding to your festive collection, go for natural materials over plastic every time.

Craft Natural Place Settings

This Christmas, set your table using natural, foraged items, for a back-to-nature, low waste vibe. Crafting your own table decor allows you to appreciate the beauty of nature without contributing to excess waste or relying on materials that may harm the environment.

Plus, these homemade decorations can be composted or reused, promoting a cycle of sustainability.

There are so many amazing colors around every winter, why shop for something plastic or single use, when you can find such beautiful things in nature?

Make Zero Waste Cocktails

Cut up the rind from juiced limes and throw them in a jar with vodka. After one to two weeks, you’ll have lime infused vodka.
