ROTARY THIS WEEK

Let’s have fun! George Nelson will be the guest of honor at the President’s Party this Wednesday night at Youngstown Country Club. Those who registered are encouraged to wear business or cocktail attire. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour in the ballroom, followed by dinner. Members of the 2026-27 Board of Directors also will be introduced during the program.

Reminder: There will not be a lunch-hour meeting this week.

Rotary Last Week

As old, crumbling bleachers were being torn down on June 25, Valley Christian High School Athletic Director Dolph Carroll updated members on the Valley Legends Complex project behind the former South High School.

The City of Youngstown owns the property on which the South High Field House and football field were located. Valley Christian will purchase the site after it is cleared, said Carroll, who also coaches the men’s basketball team. Then fundraising will begin for the project’s first phase, which is to install a new football field and locker rooms that also could be reserved by community-based teams.

Valley Christian rented five different high school facilities for their football players’ use before moving to South High seven years ago. Trees were growing through the bleachers, and the school had to rent trailers as makeshift locker rooms, Carroll observed. These students “need something to call their own,” he added.

Additional fundraising would be for the Legends Gateway, a two-floor concession facility where the history of sports in Youngstown’s past and present high schools will be remembered. “We want to honor the legends that came before us,” Carroll said.

The long-term vision is to relocate the Valley Christian high school on Southern Boulevard to the former South High School on Market Street, Carroll added.

Elsewhere, club President George Nelson and past president Scott Schulick were among those attending the Rotary International Conference in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Up Close with Butterflies

If you want to observe a Monarch butterfly – the symbol of Operation Pollination -- then getting a close-up is as near as Youngstown’s lower South Side.

Lois Martin-Uscianowski manages Southside Community Garden, which will host its 13th Butterfly Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 19. The garden is within walking distance of Rayen Early College Middle School, 58 Williamson Ave. Educational programming, music, and kids’ activities will be offered.

As reported by Denise Dick of The Business Journal, Martin-Uscianowski once lived with her grandmother in a house on some of the 11 parcels that comprise Southside Community Garden. Her late sister, a fan of butterflies, also was an inspiration to create the garden.

Martin-Uscianowski is a master gardener and obtained certification for the garden as a monarch waystation habitat. Within an area covered in netting, she grows plants that serve as food and shelter for Monarchs, swallowtails and other butterflies.

A new feature is a wildflower pollinator garden that was planted by First Energy. It contains native plants that attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, all of which contribute to global food production.
