This month Rotary International asks us to Serve to Change Lives through Rotary Fellowship. Explore the possibilities with us at our meeting Wednesday at noon at Wick Park or virtually via Zoom.
Our annual Put Kids First Summer Picnic will be from 11:30 to 1 Wednesday at the North Side Pool, Belmont Avenue at Tod Lane. We will serve lunch to school-age children in the city’s Summer Day Camp, as well as distribute school supplies and age-appropriate books. Please lend a hand!
There will not be a Zoom meeting option this week.
Wednesday also is the deadline to register for the annual Steak Fry on Aug. 14 at Scott Schulick’s house. Read below for more information and to find the registration link.
News flash: Plastic film collection, ordinarily on the second Wednesday of each month, will be moved from Aug. 14 to Aug. 21 to accommodate the Steak Fry.
Rotary Last Week
Sharmon Lesnak, a past president of Altrusa International of Youngstown, detailed her civic organization’s many activities, especially those that promote literacy. Altrusa members sort donated books at Goodwill Industries to distribute among 27 schools and organizations, including RCY for its Little Free Libraries. Without the service of Altrusa volunteers, the books would be shredded for lack of retail value. Altrusa members also sew dresses and T-shirts to send to children in Liberia; coordinate sock donation drives for the Salvation Army and Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley; and donate to local causes, including the YNDC Fresh Market on Glenwood Avenue. Thanks to Sharmon for a terrific presentation!
At her final meeting as RCY President, Deanna Rossi welcomed yet another new member, Ian Proverbs. Welcome, Ian!
The President’s Party in honor of Deanna was June 27 at Youngstown Country Club. It was a lively affair, with Rotarians dancing to the music of the Jim Frank Trio; a fast-paced presentation of thank-you gifts from Deanna to board members, the club’s “Rising Stars,” and persons of impact; and Deanna’s heartfelt message of being family to one another. Thank you, Deanna, for a successful year in so many ways.

The Annual Rotary President's Party honors the outgoing President of The Rotary Club of Youngstown and celebrates the club’s successes during the past Rotary year. It is the highlight of the club's annual social events. Rotarians prepay a portion of event costs in their annual dues, so attendance is encouraged! Guests are welcome, too.
We hope to see you to celebrate the successful presidency of Deanna Rossi as Rotary worked to "Create Hope in the World" during the 2023-24 Rotary year.

MIXING IT UP
President George Nelson requests your help with the Multi Club Mixer on July 24 at Penguin City Brewing.
George and the new presidents of Rotary clubs in Boardman, Austintown, Canfield, and Liberty-Girard are bringing members and prospective members together to become better acquainted in a fun, social atmosphere. Another element will be a basket raffle to benefit downtown residents and businesses affected by the explosion at the Realty Tower. Each club will contribute a basket; RCY’s basket will hold gift cards for many downtown restaurants.
As the host club, and with our downtown being the beneficiary of the raffle, RCY members can help by obtaining more prizes. Rotarians may donate as individuals, on behalf of their businesses and organizations, or by securing donations from other businesses.
Please inform George of your contributions by Friday, July 19. The mixer will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. the following Wednesday. See you there!

Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Mahoning and Columbiana Counties will hold their annual “Bring One, Take One” Plant Exchange and Sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug.10, at the Mahoning County OSU Extension office, 490 S. Broad St, Canfield. This event offers an opportunity for a plant exchange, a plant sale, and a garden art sale.
Check in for the Plant Exchange will begin at 9 a.m., and round one of the exchange will start at 10 a.m. To participate in the exchange, bring one or more plants with you and label them with the plant name, flower color, expected height, and growing conditions. Master Gardener Volunteers will assist in labeling if needed. There will be up to two more exchange rounds depending on plants available.
The Plant Sale includes items sourced and grown in MGVs’ gardens and will include natives, shrubs, shade and sun perennials, bulbs and house plants. Master Gardeners will be available to answer your plant questions and help carry your purchases.
The Master Gardener Volunteers have also created unique indoor and outdoor “Garden Art” items that will be on sale.
