Rotary Last WeekOh, happy Wednesday! RCY made its first award in the STEM and STEAM Mini Grant Program for Educators. President George Nelson presented representatives of South Side Academy on Oak Hill Avenue with a check for $1,000. The award will boost the school’s environmental education curriculum by giving nature-curious students some hands-on experiences in gardening, installing a pollinator habitat, and beautifying their surroundings. The Mini Grant Program was launched with proceeds from the Rotaryclipse event in April.
District 6650 Governor Elayne Bozick also made her official visit to her home club. She shared her priorities concerning building membership and advancing the causes of peace and protecting the environment. One goal is for 6650 to emerge as a peace-building district. “Positive peace is building community,” she said.
She also looks forward to the creation of cause-based clubs to “bring the Rotary Action Plan to life,” she said. Whether they join traditional or alternative club models, all members must feel welcome and be encouraged to take leadership positions as a form of engagement, she added. Rotarians both delivered and partook of Purple Pinkie Project doughnuts earlier in the day and Penguin City brews the following evening. Doughnut and beer sales were fundraisers for Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign. Special thanks to Barbara Brothers for coordinating Purple Pinkie orders, and the Beerfest committee for tapping into two great causes – supporting local businesses and ending polio through vaccinations.
