This month Rotary International asks us to Imagine Rotary by supporting literacy in our community. Explore the possibilities with us at our meeting Wednesday at noon at Wick Park or virtually via Zoom.
RCY member Ana Torres will speak at lunch Wednesday about Hispanic Heritage Month. In addition to being the Co-Director and Head of Library Services and Operations at YSU Maag Library, she also chairs the Hispanic Heritage Month planning committee. Activities will continue through Oct. 15.
The next installment of the Traveling Groundhog Craft Beer Preview will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Aeonian Brewing Co., 120 W. Chestnut St., Alliance. If you don’t want to drive alone, then ride with club members in a 15-person van with a designated driver. The van will depart around 5 p.m. from Biker Brewhouse, 5700 Patriot Blvd., Austintown. Aeonian’s brewmaster will lead a tour of the facility, with additional commentary by the owner. Food and beer will be available to purchase. Last Week's Meeting
The Annual Club Steak Fry, held Sept. 20 at Mill Creek MetroParks Pioneer Pavilion, was an evening of great food and cocktails, abundant conversation, music and dancing. Thanks to the committee members who planned the event and B&O Station Banquet Hall for grilling the steaks and salmon to perfection!
It was one of two celebratory events for RCY members last week. Penguin City Beer hosted a watch party on Sept. 18 during the first showing of the Youngstown episode of City Centric, a new series on PBS. City Centric featured interviews with Rotarians Samantha Turner and Sharon Letson, as well as singer Jackie Popovec of The Vindys, Derrick McDowell of Youngstown Flea, and Patricia Stokes of YNDC. If you missed the debut, then you can watch it on WNEO 45.1/WEAO 49.1 at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29; 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 1; 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2; or 2 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3. RCY was well represented Saturday during the Belmont Blitz Small Business Appreciation Day and Clean-up. Volunteers picked up litter along Gypsy Lane between the Route 711 exit ramp and Belmont Avenue, and afterward purchased food from four Belmont Avenue restaurants that offered specials. These activities were coordinated by the Building A Better Belmont initiative, a bi-county, multi-sector coalition at work on reimagining and reviving Belmont Avenue, from downtown Youngstown to the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna.
SUPPORT END POLIO NOW
Oct. 24 will be World Polio Day, but the End Polio Now campaign will be in focus throughout October.
Here are two ways you can support Rotary in its ongoing global effort to eradicate this life-threatening disease.
During National Immunization Days in countries that serve millions of young children, their left pinkie fingernails are painted purple with an indelible marker as a sign of being vaccinated. The Purple Pinkie Donut Project is a fundraiser to pay for polio vaccines. RCY is taking orders for Struthers IGA long john cream stick doughnuts with a dab of purple icing, at $20 per dozen. Also, District 6650 Governor Rich Tirpak encourages all Rotarians to join the Polio Plus Society, in which members pledge an annual gift of at least $100 until the World Health Organization certifies that the disease has been fully eradicated, and the world is polio free. The Rotary Foundation has established a Morocco Earthquake Response Fund to deliver supplies, provide health care, and support rebuilding efforts as survivors recover from a devastating earthquake. Go to my.rotary.org and search Disaster Response Fund to contribute.
