ROTARY THIS WEEK

January is Vocational Service Month, during which we learn about each others’ professional lives and the importance of maintaining ethical standards. We will focus Wednesday on vocation service within our club.

Rotary Last Week

Editor’s note: Special thanks to Elisha Samra and Linda Kostka for the meeting recap and photos, respectively.

Updates were presented across various domain areas during the Mid Year Club Assembly on Jan. 8. President George spoke to highlight the collaboration and work that Youngstown Rotary has done in the aftermath of the natural gas leak at the Realty Tower. It has been a busy half-year for Youngstown Rotary. Many successful initiatives took place, including the Summer Pool Party, Pints vs Polio, the distribution of 1,288 coats during Operation Warm, total installed Little Free Libraries reaching 51, and RCY officially becoming a Peace Building Club..

Later this year we will host the District Conference in honor of our District 6650 President, Elayne Bozick.

Our Environmental Committee urges everyone to review the districtwide Environmental Challenge and report points that can be claimed for activities such as reading environmental articles (including the Operation Pollination section of the Clatter) and planting pollinator gardens. Other work from the Environmental Committee includes film plastic collection, highway clean up, and speakers on environmental issues. Beerfest will be close to a zero waste event with vendors using compostable utensils, water carafes instead of plastic bottles, and divided waste bins. The Environmental Committee has begun work on an E-Waste collection initiative over the month of March and are looking for Rotarians who are interested in helping assist the project by placing or maintaining bins in the district. Please fill out this form if you are interested in volunteering for this initiative.

President Elect Gerri Jenkins spoke on her involvement in various Avenues of Service. The presence of the Rotary Club in the Youngstown Light Up Night Parade with our new Rotary inflatable was a success, with Rotarians marching in the cold and handing out Beerfest promotional materials and candy. Youngstown Rotary is finalizing officers and board members for next year, and Gerri has been gathering info towards accepting her presidency in July.

Congratulations to the Beerfest team, which has surpassed last year’s sponsorship total and is close to reaching our fundraising goals. Marketing is working hard with commercials across TV, radio and social media. Please share the online ads on your social media to boost awareness and ticket sales. Volunteers are still needed for the event; please email or text Melissa Bateman. There are also volunteering opportunities with the environmental team at Beerfest. If you’re interested in that area, then please make a note in your message to Melissa.

ROTARY FOUNDATION APPEAL

Rotary is not just a service club. It is a humanitarian organization with an office in the United Nations Building. Our areas of focus include fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, protecting the environment, saving mothers and children, supporting education,  growing local economies, and protecting the environment.

Contributions to the Rotary Foundation are encouraged. The money doesn’t just go to faraway places. A portion of each contribution will come back to our club in the form of district grants to support projects in our community.

Rotarians who give $20 or more will be entered in a drawing to win a Paul Harris Fellow. Points earned by contributing to the foundation may be transferred to other Rotarians toward their PHFs.

Linda Henderson, Rotary Foundation Chair of District 6650, says donation forms were mailed recently to all Rotarians. District Governor Elayne Bozick asks Rotarians to give $66.50 or more in honor of our district.

Backyard Biodiversity

Planning and education add to the successful outcomes of pollinator patches. The opportunities to learn are as plentiful as our list of native pollinating plants. Here’s news of yet another opportunity, beginning this week and accessible from your home.

The free virtual symposium “Inspiring Biodiversity in Our Gardens” is a collaborative effort by Western Reserve Land Conservancy, The Cleveland Pollinator and Native Plant Symposium, and Nature Spark. Nationally and regionally renowned experts will help viewers create vibrant, ecologically resilient gardens and greenspaces that benefit pollinators and wildlife.

This series will inspire homeowners, horticulturists, botanists, naturalists, educators, conservationists, landscape designers, and others to learn more about the value of using native plants and trees to create and maintain healthy habitats.

The presentations will guide us in creating gardens that benefit pollinators and other wildlife. Explore the importance of restoring our increasingly fragmented and disappearing native habitats beginning in our own backyards—whether large or small.

The first installment will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15. Speakers Kathryn Deery and Richard Hayden will present on “Stewardship Lessons of Naturalistic Public Gardens.” On Jan. 29, Dr. Sam Peck and Sam Droege will discuss “Honey Bees and Native Bees—What You Don’t Know.” The symposium will close on Feb. 12.

All sessions will be recorded; links will be shared with registrants. Sign up here.
