Rotary Last WeekJoseph Napier Jr., chair of the Youngstown Juneteenth Weeklong Celebration committee, shared information about events leading up to the Juneteenth Cultural Festival and Soul Food Cookoff this weekend at Wean Park. Juneteenth has been celebrated since 1866, after enslaved African Americans in Galveston, TX were freed, Napier said. Texas was the first state to adopt Juneteenth as a holiday, in 1980. It became a federal holiday in 2021. In Youngstown, activities will include stories of migration, genealogy and more, Napier noted. See the full schedule of events at youngstownjuneteenth.com. In other news, it was announced that the President’s Party for outgoing President Deanna Rossi will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. June 27 in a new location – the Youngstown Country Club. Reservations must be made by noon Tuesday. No tickets will be sold at the door. Also last week, four RCY members – Troy Rhoades, Josh Prest, Samantha Turner, and Scott Schulick – played in the Rotary Club of Cleveland’s inaugural Mike Johns Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament. Johns, a past District 6630 Governor and past Rotary International Director, died Feb. 23 at age 86.
RCY was represented prominently during the District 6650 Conference on June 14 and 15 in North Canton. The Purple Pinkie project, a doughnut sale to raise funds for End Polio Now, was featured in a slide show presentation. Debbie Esbenshade and Scott Schulick, past district governors, were recognized. Incoming District Governor Elayne Bozick of RCY, whose term will begin July 1, will host the 2025 District Conference next May in Youngstown.
