ROTARY THIS WEEK

This Wednesday, August 5, we'll trade the meeting room for the sunshine at our annual Cookout for Kids at North Side Pool, 2160 Belmont Avenue. Join us at 12:00 p.m. for grilled burgers, great fellowship, and plenty of summer fun. Lunch is the standard $10, and don't forget to bring your swimsuit—it promises to be a warm afternoon, and everyone is encouraged to enjoy the pool while spending time with the kids and families we serve.

The excitement continues all weekend as Ignite the Night…All Weekend Long transforms downtown Youngstown into a celebration of America's 250th anniversary. Festivities begin Friday, August 7, with First Fridays, YO! Nights, and OH WOW! On Tap, before culminating on Saturday, August 8, with the signature Ignite the Night celebration, featuring the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and a spectacular fireworks finale. A heartfelt thank you goes to the many Youngstown Rotarians volunteering to help make this monumental community celebration a success.

Finally, mark your calendars for the Operation Warm Kickoff at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, outside the Apollo on Champion Street. Bring your family and friends to enjoy live music, food trucks, and a teacher appreciation celebration while helping raise the $32,000 needed to provide a new winter coat for every elementary student in Youngstown City Schools and St. Joseph the Provider School.

Rotary Last Week

Last week's meeting featured an inspiring presentation from Anastasia James, the new Executive Director of the Butler Institute of American Art. Anastasia shared her vision for the museum's future, highlighting current exhibitions while outlining exciting plans to expand community engagement. One of the most anticipated ideas is the development of interactive exhibits designed specifically for children, creating hands-on opportunities to inspire the next generation of artists and art enthusiasts. Members appreciated learning how the Butler continues to evolve while remaining a treasured cultural institution in our community.

Looking ahead, don't forget to reserve your place at the Youngstown Rotary Club's Annual Steak Fry on Wednesday, August 26, from 5:30 to 10:00 p.m. at the home of Scott Schulick. This longstanding club tradition brings members, spouses, and guests together for an evening of outstanding food, fellowship, music, games, and an America 250 celebration. Reservations and payment must be completed by August 19 to allow for food ordering, and no registrations can be accepted after the deadline.

Meanwhile, several Youngstown Rotarians, joined by friends from neighboring districts, have begun their journey through Zimbabwe. Photos and updates have been shared through our club's WhatsApp group and have already shown some spectacular images of their safari tour. The group will be visiting the Rose Charity Orphanage in Botswana soon, delivering gifts generously donated by Youngstown Rotarians.

Biodiversity Refresher

The Farmer’s Footprint is a wonderful resource for those who want to know more about our ecosystem and about how we can cultivate the land in a sustainable way. The site has a lot of educational materials which explain the fundamentals of principles that we often refer to in Operation Pollination articles, and so this week we will be reviewing biodiversity and why it is important. Biodiversity is the incredible variety of life on Earth, from microorganisms and fungi to plants, animals, and entire ecosystems. According to Farmer's Footprint, this diversity creates the living relationships that make life possible, supporting the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the health of our soils.

On farms, biodiversity includes soil microbes, insects, birds, livestock, native plants, and wildlife working together to create resilient food systems. Healthy soils recycle nutrients, improve water retention, and provide the foundation for nutritious crops, while pollinators and beneficial insects help crops reproduce and naturally regulate pests.

When biodiversity declines, these natural systems become less resilient. Simplified landscapes and repeated chemical use can weaken soil life, reduce water-holding capacity, increase reliance on fertilizers and pesticides, and leave farms more vulnerable to drought, flooding, pests, and disease. The effects extend beyond agriculture, influencing water quality, climate stability, and the health of communities.

Farmer's Footprint emphasizes that protecting biodiversity begins with everyday choices. Supporting farms that work with ecological systems, planting native species, creating habitat for pollinators, growing heirloom varieties, and learning about local ecosystems all help strengthen the living relationships that sustain people and the planet.

Healthy biodiversity supports healthy food, healthy landscapes, and ultimately, healthy people.
