ROTARY THIS WEEK

YSU English Festival Committee Co-Chairs Jeff Buchanan and Angela Messenger will be our guests on May 14 at Wick Park. After 47 years, the festival is such a strong draw that it takes three days to complete. Thousands of junior high and high school students from northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania hear from well-known authors; write essays; attend artistic performances and book discussions; and play language games. It’s all to promote reading and writing among our future authors and artists.

This week’s menu: Chicken Francaise; scalloped potatoes; vegetable; salad.

Have you completed the Club Health Check? The membership survey will close Thursday. See the QR code below to share your thoughts and shape our future.

Monday will be the final day to register for the District 6650 Conference on May 24 at Tyler History Center downtown. Show your pride in our club and our District Governor, Elayne Bozick. Details are included in this newsletter.

Rotary Last Week

To those Rotarians who were traveling with Ana Torres in Ireland and Scotland, or had other commitments on May 7, we missed you – and you missed a fun meeting!

Following a taco bar luncheon by Chef Christopher Bonacci, the Great Rotary Bake Off commenced. Eight Rotarians contributed these yummy treats: Lavender Tea Cake; Black Forest Cake; Lime Bars; Lemon Coconut Almond Cake; Lemon & Lime Bars, Apple Pear Strudel; and Lemon Blueberry Cookies.

Rotarians sample it all and voted with dollar bills for their favorites. The glass Mason jars in front of each tray filled up quickly. Deb Flora’s lemon blueberry cookies edged out Jack Kravitz’s apple pear strudel by a single dollar. The big winner was RCY’s Peace Pole Project Fund, which grew by $153 in bake off proceeds. Well done, Elisha Samra and Jack Kravitz!

Kravitz also took the podium with Mike Latessa, his Beerfest co-chair of the last two years, and future Beerfest co-chair Troy Rhoades, to announce the net proceeds of our 2025 craft beer and wine festival. It amounted to $41,968 – well beyond the previous high-water mark of about $29,000. The Beerfest committee exceeded its own goal of $33,000 in sponsorships, and premium tickets sold extremely well, Kravitz noted. Rhoades stressed the multi-value proposition of Beerfest – we raise money for our community grant program while building camaraderie among members who volunteer at the event.

Brendan Considine shared his good news: He will be the new principal at Cardinal Mooney High School, effective July 1. Congratulations, Brendan!

Rotarians talked a little baseball during the Downtown Service Clubs luncheon on May 8 at the YMCA. Bob DiBiasio of the Cleveland Guardians was the speaker.

ROTARY SPIRIT WEAR SALE

The Rotary Club of Youngstown Spirit Wear Committee is pleased to announce the Club Apparel Shop has reopened for the 2024 season - just in time to preorder for holiday shopping!

We are bringing back old favorites and have added a few new items, too!  There are a variety of quality items to give you options that will allow you to wear the Rotary logo with pride for any occasion.

No matter where you go while wearing the logo apparel, people will see it and know that you have dedicated yourself to the ideals of Service Above Self. This results in greater brand recognition and is a simple, yet effective, membership outreach tactic you don’t even have to think about.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Note: If using a mobile device, please click on the info tab at the top to order each item.

NEW ITEMS IN 2024

JOIN THE PARADE

RCY has registered to enter the downtown Holiday Parade at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. President George is looking for at least 10 Rotarians to share the Magic of Rotary with attendees.

Gerri Jenkins needs someone with a pickup or flatbed truck to join the parade and carry our inflatable Rotary logo along the route. See Gerri or George to volunteer.

Rotarians can gather at the Mahoning County Land Bank office on the third floor of City Center One at East Federal and Champion streets. Deb Flora and the Land Bank will provide light refreshments.

The parade is one of many First Fridays events on Dec. 6. Youngstown Flea on Phelps will be from 4 to 8 p.m. The SMARTS Holiday Open House will be worth a visit, the tree lighting on Central Square will be at about 7:15 p.m., and commemorative mugs will be available for evening drink specials. Know Your Bees

By Scott Prajzner and Mary Gardiner

Department of Entomology

OSU Extension

Bees are beneficial insects that pollinate flowering plants by transferring pollen from one flower to another. This is important for plant reproduction and food production. In fact, pollinators are responsible for 1 out of every 3 bites of food you take. While the honey bee gets most of the credit for providing pollination, there are actually about 500 bee species in Ohio.

This fact sheet provides key features needed to identify 10 types of bees found in home landscapes. The following information is included:

  • Approximate size. Your bee may vary slightly.

  • Common nesting locations.

  • Identifying behaviors to watch for.

  • Additional ID features that may be seen with the aid of a hand lens.
